Image of Rodney HideRodney Hide is the Minister of Local Government.  He is joined by John Carter who holds the  Associate Minister portfolio.

The Minister's is primarily responsible for the legislative framework under which the system of local government is constituted, and for its overall effectiveness.  The core legislation for which the Minister is responsible are the Local Government Act 2002, the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002, the Local Electoral Act 2001 and some residual provisions of the Local Government Act 1974.*

The Department of Internals Affairs is responsible for the local government sector and manage Auckland governance, civil defence, community outcomes, dogs, Lake Taupo Harbourmaster, local council Information, local elections, the Local Government Commission, local government legislation, local government policy, local government services, offshore islands and rates.
