Councillor2010 Survey will boost voter interest WELLINGTON, Oct 2010 Jarrod Coburn
A survey of Councillors and Mayors throughout New Zealand provides a rare insight into the thoughts of this hard-working but much-maligned group of people. The survey, which compares attitudes and experiences of elected local government officials with their counterparts in the United Kingdom, will capture the interest of voters and hopefully encourage more people to participate, according to researcher Jarrod Coburn. Mr Coburn says he is "amazed" at the hard work put into the job by many Councillors and Mayors, who often work long hours while bearing the brunt of public criticism and scorn. He goes on to say that it is apparent by the survey's results that we are much better off in New Zealand compared to the United Kingdom. A summary of the survey will be released to participants on Wednesday and to the media on Thursday. The Associate Minister of Local Government, Hon. John Carter, and Minister of Revenue, Hon. Peter Dunne, were treated to a sneak preview of results last month at the launch of the Wellington Regional Citizens' Forum.
